OTHELLO

He conquers our sympathy more immediately than any other hero of William Shakespeare, but someone noticed that there is a hell ("hell") in Othello. But there's only Othello-the noble and fearless warrior, the "strange stranger/from here and everywhere"-because there's Iago, the Prophet of resentment and disorder, and because there is the beautiful Desdemona, shakespeariana word meaning "love".

The play begins and ends in darkness is pierced by light and progresses, unstoppable, in the shadows of Venice and Cyprus, geographies of order and chaos, submerged or surrounded by water, element that leads, transports, reflect, mirrors, distorts. Othello remains in our memory and imagination why the tragedy par excellence of difference and otherness, of doubt and vulnerability, of jealousy and betrayal. But it is also the tragedy of the language, this wonderful "music of Othello" which is here reinterpreted by poet Daniel Jonas.

On work in Nuno Carinhas scene, Othello appears after Macbeth (2017), forming a Shakespearean diptych where the Director puts in perspective two radicals and exuberant visions of evil. "You can only see the evil in full use."
